  • Sad news: "Today we lost Richard Biggs"

    Just found at RASTB5.Mod:

Subject: Today We Lost Richard Biggs
From: [email protected] (Jms at B5)
Date: 5/22/04 7:43 PM Eastern Daylight Time
    Message-id: <[email protected]>

I was awakened today with several phone calls from cast members and Doug to
pass along the terrible news that this morning, Richard Biggs passed away.

We're still gathering information, so take none of this as firm word, but what
seems to have happened, happened quickly. He woke up, got up out of bed...and
went down. The paramedics who showed up suggested it was either an aneurysm or
    a massive stroke.

His family members have been informed, and all of the the cast have, as far as
we can determine, also been informed.

This is a terrible loss for all of us. Richard was a consummate professional
but more than that he was an honorable, stand-up guy. If he gave you his word
on something, you never had to wonder about it afterward. He was always
helpful and supportive of all the cast, even those who only came in for one
episode, always with a ready smile and determined to do whatever it took to
make the scene work. He was, quite simply, a terrific guy, and everyone here
is just devastated at the news.

More word as this develops. We may try to have some kind of fund raiser to
help give whatever assistance may be helpful for his kids.

    We all miss him terribly.

This is very sad news...I feel for his family. It seems strange because the guy was always in shape and seemed to take care of himself....depressing...

              Oh My God,
This is terrible, I saw him at GENCON West a few months ago. He seemed so healthy and vibrant. My heart goes out to his family.

                  NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Man, this is so weird. I was just logging on to post on some subjects I was thinking about recently. One of Penn Jilette's apperance on Dennis Miller last week. The other was about how "the look" of B5 made it so unique. Not just the settings and the "models" of ships, but the people, including Biggs.

Sheridan has this charisma about him that makes it interesting just to watch him walk down the corridor. Ivanova is this big Russian chick not so slight of frame -- something we're not used to in the world of "bony, skin tight catsuit" world of modern sci-fi. Garibaldi is a baldy that combed his hair straight back, making a "light socket" bur style out of it. He then took the route of shaving it off, also something that made him stand out. Franklin, good looking black guy, also has a charisma somewhat similar to Sheridan, where just watching him is interesting. G'kar, with Katsulas under all that makeup, somehow was able to convey his feelings and emotions better than some light makeup characters. Plus, the Narn makeup rocks. Londo's hair and rakish clothing. The universe is just so unique and eye-catching, something not accomplished very successfully, IMO, since the original Star Wars.

And Richard Biggs was no small contributor.
Recently, there was a reckoning. It occurred on November 4, 2014 across the United States. Voters, recognizing the failures of the current leadership and fearing their unchecked abuses of power, elected another party as the new majority. This is a first step toward preventing more damage and undoing some of the damage already done. Hopefully, this is as much as will be required.

                    Walkabout

This is a sad day, indeed. Biggs provided a much needed 3rd dimension to the sci-fi medical role. He wasn't just a doctor, he was a real person. Biggs' talent far exceeded the spouting of technobabble. He will be missed.

                    I'm gonna go watch Walkabout.

That death is assured is one of our two certainties. That it always comes as a shock is the other. There is little more we can say beyond that Richard will be sadly missed by all the fans of the show and of his work in general. The sympathy of all of us goes to his family and friends.

It's always really, really, sad, if someone dies before his time. Which was certainly the case with Richard Biggs. Yet his work, as dr. Franklin on B5, will live on, and that's to be thankful for.

Like a dripping faucet, the people you know slip slowly into the abyss, little by little, one at a time, until the end.
