  • Crusade Commentaries

I just recently purchased the Crusade DVD's (I had already puchased a set of VCD's from the Phillipines years before WB released the DVD set). I note that "Racing the Nights" still contains the [expurgated] commentary by JMS, but I thought he had told them to delete the commentary entirely from all subsequent pressings.

WTF??? Does Amazon still have the original pressings, or is WB being duplicitous [again/still]...

I don't think there's any way for the consumers to know how many pressings there may be. Anybody know how many units there are in a usual release?

I was under the impression that JMS had recorded a commentary charting some of the problems with Crusade but that Warners had not deleted that commentary but in fact never included it at all. Or am I mistaken here?

My understanding is that jms recorded commentaries that included telling what really happened behind the scenes with Crusade. WB then edited that portion out of the commentary and replaced it with something from one of the on-camera interviews to keep the commentary from sounding like there was this big part missing. And when jms learned of this, he then informed WB to pull all of his commentaries from the discs.

Yes, JMS recorded a commentary that catalogued some of the problems with TNT but that portion of his commentary was replaced by part of the on-camera interview he'd done instead (which explains why there was no intro to the set by JMS as there had been for B5). He wasn't sent a copy to approve as had been the custom and didn't notice the omission so he didn't know what they'd done until the set came out. At that point (I gather) he raised a ruckus and they eventually agreed to delete the commentary from all future pressings since the agreement they'd made was to use all of it or none of it.

This post is where it was first discussed.

Here's where he tells of WB's agreement to delete the commentary.

ZP was wondering if WB had not followed up on that second agreement to delete the commentary from future pressings.

I'd bet that Amazon and others are still selling copies made from that first pressing, and doubt that WB is being duplicitous [again/still]. Remember, Crusade does not have the name recognition of "Babylon 5" because it does not have "Babylon 5" in its name. So, it does not show up on searches for "Babylon 5". You have to go seatching for "Crusade" and then fend off all the pesky hits from "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade" and everything else that has "Crusade" in the title.

It would have been much better if they had worked "Babylon 5" into the title. e.g. Babylon 5: Crusade (USA) (working title).

Also, we have no way of knowing how many copies of "Crusade" were made in that first pressing.

Well I agree that it would have been much better to include "Babylon 5" in the title, but actually, if you do a "Babylon 5"-search on amazon.com, "Crusade" does very well show up in the search results, currently as no.11...!

That's probably because Amazon allows the use of "tags" and people like me are using tags to link "Babylon 5" and "Crusade". I remember doing searches at Wal-Mart.com and BestBuy.com this year, and Crusade didn't show up in "Babylon 5" searches.

Wasn't the working title 'The Babylon Project: Crusade'?

That is one of the three working titles listed on IMDb, but it still doesn't include the "5".

Babylon 5: Crusade (USA) (working title)

Crusade: The Babylon Project (USA) (working title)

I prefer Babylon 5: Crusade (USA) (working title)

                        Why Not? One Last Time

JMS has a talent to make fictional characters endearing and three-dimensional. You don't see Lex Luthor on Smallville slipping in and out of relapses (Michael Gairebaldi). These actors and the roles they play aren't just lines on the script. They're human. They're our friends and family. Crusade was ruthlessly cut before it reached its full maturity. Over what? Ratings? Budget issues? Bullshit. So why can't we find Crusade a new lease of life? Why not? Crusade deserves another shot. It is certainly of a higher class than most of the rip-offs and half-planned shows littering the television.

Forget that I am not the thousandth person to call for a revival. Forget the notion that Crusade is beyond salvaging. If it's good, then its good. We have a responsibility as fans to provide a humane show that isn't just a spin-off of a spin-off.

                        Least that's what I think.

No, not ratings. Crusade was cancelled before it ever aired.

No, it had the same budget as Babylon 5 Season 5.

Crusade was cancelled because TNT found out that their core audience, the Law & Order/Sports/Wrasslin' audience doesn't like sci-fi, and because JMS wouldn't make it into the kind of show that core audience might like, "Baywatch meets Wrestling in Space" ( http://www.jmsnews.com/msg.aspx?id=1-1139 ).

Because Warner Brothers has no outlet for it, no network, especially at a budget that would allow new episodes to have the same production values as the existing 13 episodes (because the sets would all have to be built again from scratch, ditto for a lot of the wardrobe, and probably all of the props.). Then, there's getting the actors back. It all would require more budget than "afraid to risk a nickel Warner Brothers" cound bear.

I was one of the first to call for a revival.
