  • B5 and the Space Age

As we all are aware of , this month marks the 50th anniversary of the space age , the launch by the USSR of Sputnik [pronounced : spootneek] 1 on October 4th 1957.

This made me think (ouch!) :

"The Gathering" is set in 2257 - exactly 300 years after the beginning of the Space Age.

This cannot be a coincidence - what do you think ? With all the planned references in Babylon 5 JMS cannot have missed that - can he ? has anyone asked him about it ?

I did...sort of. It was a question I'd posted online that he didn't answer but somebody else saw it and asked him again at a convention and emailed me the answer. As I recall, he mainly wanted it set around then and didn't want to use decades/half decades as the beginning and ending points so he just picked a starting year that sounded good to him.

There's the chance I might be misremembering that but I know that Sputnik wasn't any part of the answer. Too bad, it would have been really cool.
