Now..*space* shows seem to be getting cancelled, but the ones we've had have run their respective courses for the most part. And it's hard to come up with a fresh idea that appeals to a mass audience.

Space shows are a funny case in point, because their format doesn't seem to have changed much since Trek in the '60s, and even then I think they were lagging well behind the literary science fiction of the time.

But I don't think the possibilities are exhausted yet, especially with modern budgets and cheap CG effects, virtual sets etc. What about a show about a police force in a Bladerunneresque futuristic city? Or a colony world in the process of rapid terraforming (which could evolve over the seasons)? It's only poverty of imagination that says we have to keep endlessly focusing on a starship and its crew.

Oddly enough, although I don't enjoy Stargate all that much, I think it's a really good example of a show making good use of an unusually original format (although it was the movie, which I did enjoy, that invented it).

Heck, this is sci-fi..we should be all about new media and new technology. Go TLT!

Yeah, it's an experiment I really hope pays off. The whole B5 vs DS9 thing back in the day was proof that budget is not directly proportional to quality. And if it's possible to make big profits from small targeted productions digitally distributed, I'm all for it.

I was watching The Lost Tales trailer for about the 100th time and it got me thinking. President Sheridan's statement, "Babylon 5 is a place of beginings and endings, I wonder which this will be?" is perfect to describe what is currently going on in Sci Fi right now.
As many people are aware, many of the most popular Sci Fi shows will soon be cancelled such as Stargate SG1, Battlestar Galactica, etc. Is there any decent Sci Fi in production that will replace them?
As JMS mentioned in his telephone interview with Amazon, Babylon 5 essentially kick started production of some new Sci Fi proving that other shows besides Star Trek could go longer than 3 years.
I will only watch good quality Sci Fi and there doesn't seem to be much out there right now or in the forseeable future. If anyone is aware of any new high quality productions coming out please let the rest of us know.

SG1 is getting a series of DVDs coming out, if it sells well, just like B5. And the second movie is supposed to act as a pilot of sorts for a potential new show.

Second, Amanda Tapping is moving over to Atlantis..so that's going to become more SG1 like, I think.

Battlestar..has run its course. I'm gladi t's going.

Star trek, they ruined.

I don't know if it's sci-fi, or if the sci-fi concepts of which there's been an abundance over the past 5-6 years (andromeda, firefly, starhunter, lost, heroes, jeremiah, farscape, dr. who resurgance, 4400...just to name a few :P ) has created a pretty saturated market, if you ask me. back in the day the options were just star trek...and star trek. that's all there was til b5 came along. We've had a very happy last decade for the genre, if you think about it. Not to mention that there's a zillion sci-fi or comic movies coming out on a monthly basis. The genre has been dominating.

TV, as I mentioned in another thread is just too expensive to produce and you're going to get the same revenue whether you run Stargate or ECW in that time slot, and if ECW gets better ratings, you'll get more money for something that's half the cost to produce.

I am just hoping that they don't botch Flash Gordon or the Bionic Woman, but they are the only things up and coming that I am aware off.
