Heads up, Jane fans. Maggie Egan's episode of Standoff will air not this Friday, but next Friday, July 06, on Fox, 9 pm Eastern.

You will be watching, right? I'm going to be there. Big surprise there, huh? lol

Standoff is a show that was on Fox last fall, then went away for that stupid midseason break all the networks went gaga over this year, and it finally came back a few weeks ago. It's about FBI negotiators who try to talk people out of whatever bad situation they're in (bank robbers, terrorists, husband killing wife & family, etc).

Gina Torres (Firefly, Xena) is the team's supervisor. Ron Livingston (Office Space) is the lead guy. I can't remember who the lead girl is.

Maggie talked about it in the recent Babylon podcast. If I remember right, she and her husband are in a bank, and her husband's played by John Billingsley (sp?) from StarGate (and enterprise), and it's a pretty substantial part.

She was indeed. She was also in Angel and Hercules and Alias and a whole bunch of other shows too. Like my mommy Jan, she gets around.

Maggie was *fantastic* in this.

John Billingsley - Doctor Phlox on Enterprise - was her husband. He caught some higher-ups in his company doing some ... shall we say ... no-nos, and was in court testifying about those no-nos. He had a bag over his head to protect his privacy.

Maggie was watching, along with an armed guard, from a motel or apartment or something, close by. After John gets done with his testimony, he is escorted back to Maggie. Just after that, the bad dude tracks them down, guns blazing, and kills the guard, and kidnaps the couple.

It's up to the FBI negotiators to work with the captor to free the couple without getting anybody else killed.

Now ... I have seen Maggie in other parts, besides Babylon 5. I tuned in excitedly for her part in Malcolm in the Middle, only to find it was a tiny cameo with only a couple seconds on air. I've seen her in that dreadful Seinfeld show, where her character was working at the airport for about five seconds. So when she said it was definitely more than a cameo, I was pretty excited, but guarded.

I was not disappointed. The episode was centered completely around her and her husband. When she was not on screen, the dialog was about her (and her husband). When she was on screen, she was able to show a range that she only barely touched upon in Babylon 5.

She could be the next great action star.

Here's the clincher ... I asked a couple co-workers, who were completely unfamiliar with her or the Standoff show, to tune in and let me know what they thought. The common reaction was "Hey, she's pretty good. I'd like to see more of her, and the show's not bad either."

It's my opinion. In my opinion, Seinfeld is a bore, it's dreadful, and I will never understand how shows such as that and Friends are so highly-rated.

I'm sorry, though, to call it "one of, if not THE, top comedies of all time" is disingenuous at best. When compared to comedies such as the Cosby show, Maude, The Jeffersons, or Green Acres, or Hazel, or any number of actual comedies through the ages, well, Seinfeld just doesn't compare.

I don't know about Standoff being "formulaic" ... As you may have already figured out, I tuned in for the cast, specifically Maggie. I haven't seen enough of the show to have an informed opinion of whether it's "formulaic" or not.
