  • Is Warners promoting The Lost Tales at all?

    Hey Guys!!!

I still cant believe we will actually have new B5 but I was just wondering if any of you have seen any publicity being made, commercial, print ads, magazine covers or interviews with the actors to anounce this release?

Its already in the top 20 at amazon.com imagine if Warners was actively promoting the DVD. My friend who loves B5 didnt even know until I told him last week, maybe we as fans should help get the word out somehow since future releases will depend on how well this does...

    Anyways, just a though...

This is obviously a completely self-serving plug, but I'll be doing a full-length feature on The Lost Tales DVD for Starlog, hopefully the next issue we start working on. I've already interviewed Bruce Boxleitner, Tracy Scoggins and Peter Woodward, so it should be a nice piece.

Oh, I think it's in the public interest, too, Joe. Same as you letting us know about the TLT panel at Comic-Con.

Keep us posted as to particulars, okay?

I shall be picking up Starlog Joe. But honestly..I really haven't seen too much in promotions from WB. Have adds been popping up in comic books this month or anything like that?

If the "official" site is anything to go by, it all looks pretty half-arsed to me...but I think there's enough interest in it from the existing fanbase to generate some minor buzz for it, we'll wait to see if it delivers on it's great potential...

There is still 5 more weeks to go. I'd look for promotion at the beginning of July.

Also, this months Sci-Fi Magazine has an article on B5:TLT. They get a few things wrong but it is a fine article.

Please, self-serve away! I appreciate hearing these things. After all, it's not exactly like you're hitting us with the ol' hard sell. I never even look at the magazines these days, so I'm glad for the heads up. I'll check it out.

As far as the original question, I've been the one to tell most of the B5 fans I know. It seems to be in stealth mode so far.

What I expected all along really, one of the reasons TLT is being made in the first place is I'd guess that Warners realise that it will market itself.

Could be for the best if you ask me as if its just the existing B5 fans there aiming at then its much less likely we'll see any interference.

I agree with that, I don't think it's intended to or likely to appeal to people who aren't already B5 fans, and they don't really need to be marketed to in a traditional sense as long as they get the message somehow.

Still, I'm not entirely satisfied with the way it's been done so far. It's the lack of news or updates that's really bothering me - there hasn't really been a sense of momentum to keep the anticipation fresh since the trailer. Hopefully there'll be something on Friday.

Agreed. The momentum died off about 2 days after it showed up on amazon. I'm shocked that the newsgroup is so dead.

I think the newsgroup has said just about everything that can be said without having actually seen the finished episodes.

For what it's worth, the trailer being posted did make it into the headlines on Slashdot, so that alone is free marketing to a large chunk of the geek market.

Well, here's a tidbit on the Canadian promotional front... a couple of weeks ago, Bruce appeared on the SPACE Channel to present an award for "Favourite Classic TV Show". Before he announced the winner, he gave a brief intro to TLT and then showed a clip of the trailer.

That's the only promotional material I've seen outside of the video blogs and the new Babylon 5 website, but according to the TLT press release, we should expect some TV and online advertising.

                          Marketing Support
Babylon 5: The Lost Tales will be supported by extensive national media campaign including TV and Online advertising. Marketing support will also include significant presence at the San Diego ComicCon. Online podcasts and a completely new redesigned website will also deliver significant awareness.

Well The Sci-Fi Channel (the network) is doing that Eureka marketing, right? B5:TLT does not have a network, so what you are seeing in Manhattan may not translate to B5:TLT.

Frankly, I'm not expecting a whole helluva lot of marketing support from Warner Bros., although it'd be damned nice to see a bit of mainstream advertising, something that would cast a wider net.

Are DVD rental and sales organisations like Blockbuster including B5:TLT in their August catalogues? These magazines should be available soon.
