Doing this as one episode since it's one story.
This..was the first episode of babylon 5 I watched. I had been a deep space nine fan for some time and happened to tune into this episode where I see a more realistic station without the happy-go-lucky utopia universe. The effects even then I thought were cheesy, but with all this revolution going on on Mars talk, I could see this was a complicated story worth following and checking out.
I especially liked the character of Garabaldi at the time, since this was one of his more emotionally riveting episodes of the first season. I totally forgot that we met Lise so early. Was she played by the same actress later? I forget. That relationship tidbit adds to the realism of the show. Usually when there's a love interest, you see the character really just pining for that one true love and not deviating so much. But Garabaldi has been checking out Talia the whole show until this point, and finally confides in her about his love. I know I've totally been in the situation of chasing a hottie while having real interest in someone else...only to give up on the former and confide in her about the latter only to become friends with the former. I love JMS' writing.
I don't know who the actor who played Draal is, but I like him. Very amusing. This sets the stage for all the cool time travel episodes to come. Sinclair has a little tiff with another earthforce officer and comes out on top (watching this again..I keep thinking...wow, that's insubordination and maybe even treason going on there. Shocking the captain let this slide so easily, even given the outcome.) We haven't really seen much of babylon 5 in a space battle, and it happens here, with some assistance from Draal down below.
Oh Yes! And Londo comes out all self-sacrificial to help out Delenn and Draal. Really adds to the depth of his character, making his tragedy even more stinging when it actually happens. It's just so sad when you watch the good in him.
And a THIRD prisoner reference in the show! When the aliens are downloading the language banks, I noticed it saying "I am not a number, I am a free man." JMS went way happy with these references. I never noticed all these before because I just watched the prisoner last year, so I hadn't seen it prior to this viewing of the show.
Thoughts?
