  • Hello--I'm a huge B5 fan..I'm new here

    Hello everyone--

I just signed up today at B5 world at B5TV.COM as well as this one but I'm probably the biggest B5 fan in South Sacramento. I realize it's going to take a few days to get into the groove but I just finished watching In The Beginning for the first time (not on my own)with my wife that I married in October. It appears she likes the show but she just got introduced to the show for the first time from the beginning. Let me get my feet wet but I'll be able to get into the swing of things here.

Just curious what avatar could I use that won't steal from anyone else here. I was going to use Londo or Sheridan but I don't want to use anyone else's. Please let me know.

(editing due to finding a good avatar) just hope that the avatar I'm using is ok..I figured it would be cute being that I'm just married and that I'm going to be watching B5 with my wife.

Welcome, and congratulations on your recent wedding. If I read your post right, you've seen the show before but this is the first time for your wife? Oh, you lucky things!

Please feel free to post any comments your bride might have as she watches the show. We enjoy going along for the ride to share that 'first time' experience and we'll happily keep a thread 'spoiler free' if she'd like to come and play.

Thank You very much on congratulating me on my marriage, I really appreciate that. And yes your right..I've gone all the way through the show 2 times and planning to go through the show at least 3 more times before the end of the year (once on my own, once with my buddy Dustin and of course once with my wife) I'm not sure if she will be posting messages due to the fact she's a huge Star Wars and V fan but we shall see how she reacts to the show as we continue on. We just watched ITB next of course is The Gathering and then Midnight on the Firing Line. If she doesn't come to the boards I will for sure post her thoughts for her. Just stay tuned..

        Thanks again Jan..

Welcome and congratulations. The good news is your wife is already a fan of science fiction, so it's not so hard selling her on the concept in general, and her opinions of the stories' dramatic and emotional merit will not be colored by an inability to accept "that Bozo the Clown guy" or "the bad guy that looks like a lizard". Of course, she may rag on the effects for awhile, but that ought to stop by mid season 2.

As old and decrepit fans, we do thirst for new opinions and insight to make our days more interesting, so if your wife doesn't post at least pass along your observations of her B5 experience as you go.

First thank you Smileofashadow for welcoming me!

now thank you B5_Obsessed for the red carpet and wedding congrats! I really think her rags on the special effects may not happen much considering her all time favorite tv show is V from the early 80's..plus the special effect are even very very well done even for 1993. The only think she may have a difficult time with of course is the movie The Gathering considering some of the cast is replaced and G'Kar and Deleen get the biggest make up improvement but other than that I really have high hopes for B5. The fact that B5 themes parallel very much V the fact that they are all fighting for Victory (no pun intended, well maybe a little.) There are a lot of religious over tones that I think she will like plus all the explosions. My wife Dawn can't get enough of the 2 Death Stars exploding in Star Wars so she will love all the fights and stuff.

She already is very curious and intrigued after watching ITB already so Step one out of 12 is a success. I told my wife this morning that she's already invited to the boards so as the show gets to the 2nd season I'm sure she may end up discussing and if not I will for sure be her sound board and post for her.

thanks again everyone for your support..that means alot.

Just curious does anyone know of a support group or fan club for B5 in Sacramento and if not I would like to start one which will include the show V. My wife and I are seriously considering starting one.

For the fun of trivia, regarding V and B5, quoting Wikipedia:

In 1989, Warner Bros. commissioned J. Michael Straczynski (who would later go on to create Babylon 5) to write a pilot screenplay for a proposed new series, tentatively titled V: The Next Chapter, that would have continued the V storyline. Picking up five years after the end of the NBC series, it would have followed the efforts of a new Resistance movement on a conquered Earth to make contact with the "Outsiders", the faction of the Visitors' own people who oppose their Leader, who had finally responded to a summons put out at the end of the original miniseries. The only character from the older V to appear in this script was Ham Tyler. After numerous drafts, the script, entitled "The Rebirth", was finally abandoned when the studio decided it would be too cost-prohibitive to produce.
I've never seen V, but when it comes to what I've read about it on the net, I'd love to see jms be able to take a romp through the world of V.

V at times when it comes to special effects is a little behind it's time but overall the FX are still pretty good. The characters like in B5 universe aren't one dimensional either..you fall in love with characters really fast. I didn't realize honestly that JMS was interested in the show in 89. However, go to the kenethjohnson.com website and you will find out that He (the creator of the show--left after the first miniseries because he wasn't happy and 2 other people took over the show) has come back with completed novel called V: The 2nd Generation due out this fall and a possible deal in the works for another tv show to continue the series. The only problem though is that numerous fans love the premise the 2 new producers did with the show and Kenneth does not so if he comes back with the continuation he may end up producing the show as if The Final Battle (2nd miniseries) and The regular 84 series never took place.

Very controversial but overall condering anything else what may happen the first V mini series, Final Battle and the series itself are very very good IMHO.

Loved the original V miniseries, and The Final Battle ... since they have always been shown back to back on UK TV I have never really made a distinction between them as two separate series.

As far as the ongoing series is concerned, it was just a bit meh, really. Marc Singer's face acted better than most of the cast, and they did not do very much that was particularly original with the new (non-mini series characters).

Whilst you could get away with running a new V TV show ignoring what happened in the weekly series, which most people probably haven't ever seen, I don't think you could ignore The Final Battle.

A belated welcome to you, Babylon5fan07. I'm looking forward to hearing about your wife's reactions. It's always fun, and it's amazing how many little nuances can crop up in discussions even if you've seen the series, umm, well, ah, let's say more than a couple times.

First of all, Thank You WorkerCaste for the belated welcome party..Believe me I'm as excited to find out my wife's reactions to the B5 universe as much as she was curious to find out my reactions to V. Like Stephen Furst said in Animal House as Dorfman(Flounder) "This is just GREAT!"

Read Below with minimal spoilers whatsoever..
As far as Garibaldi's Hair...Unfortunately V (The first miniseries) was created by Kenneth Johnson who created The Hulk, The Bionic Woman and Alien Nation plus more but he left during the production of The Final Battle miniseries. A lot of disagreements were made during production including the role by Michael Ironside to many of the other characters in the show which I'm not going to give away for people who haven't seen the show but KJ left the show during the Final Battle and was taken over by two producers named Robert Singer and Daniel H. Blatt.

Since KJ has left the show there has been a huge controversy by the most dedicated and hardcore V fans. My wife says there are people that don't know that KJ left the show to 2 other executive producers but as far as the one's that do know the line is somewhat divided. There are group of fans who never ever wanted anything to do with the show after KJ left and then there are fans who only want the show to be completed by the 2 other executives. The problem here lies is that the new novel is due out this fall and many V fans are on the edge of their seat to find out what approach KJ is going to take being that he's the one taking over the reigns again. Marc Singer, Jane Badler, Faye Grant and Robert Englund have already signed on to do the project if it's approved by Warner Brother or NBC depending on who will take the show. The full season series after the Final Battle ended on a cliffhanger and what remains to be seen is depending on what KJ is going to do. Most loyal V fans enjoy what happened from The Final Battle and the series on but again there are the group of fans that are loyal to just KJ and just want the whole show wiped out from scratch and start again right from where the first mini-series ended.

For anyone who who has seen the first V or is unsure about what I'm talking about..The first miniseries primarily ends exactly how my signiture reads below and everything else after that is The Final Battle and the series itself.

                        Alex,

Hello and welcome. Long time Lurker - recent joiner here. As much as I enjoyed the show it's first run, I can say with no doubt that watching it accelerated, 1-3 eps a night on DVD with my wife was pure electric joy.

The depth and texture of the story come that much more alive when seen in a serial format like that.

And - the double joy of knowing what is coming while watching the wonder of the wifes exposure to it the first time was great beyond words.

I hope you enjoy the experence as much as I did.

                        Fred
I am a man of a not insignificant build. Standing 6'1, 205 lbs with a good more of that muscle than chub. Aged some 36 years, I can - if I choose - put on an imposing aura. There are - however - 22 words that can reduce me to a quivering mass of weeping tears. A pitiful semblance of a 5 year old boy who just watched his puppy get ran over in the street. Those words? - As for Delenn, every morning for as long as she lived, Delenn got up before dawn and watched the sun come up

Hi, Tiamat! Since Ranger welcomed you on the other thread, I thought I'd chime in here. There's also a thread around here someplace (though it's been a while since anybody posted there, I think) where people can post what their user name means (if anything) in case you feel like looking for that.

Pull up a chair, sit on the floor, have a good time. Feel free to start threads or join conversations. We're not formal around here. All we ask is that people try to follow the Declaration of Principles and be kind to one another. Polite is good, too.

                            Welcome aboard!
