  • Who would you invite?

If you were throwing a dinner party and could invite any 5 characters from B5, who would you invite? Assume that if people you'd want to invite were at war or otherwise in conflict that they would meet under a flag of truce for the occassion. I'll start:

    Matthew Gideon
    Elizabeth Lochley
    Michael Garibaldi
    Stephen Franklin
    Galen

I just think that conversation between this group would be fascinating.

    Next?

I would go for a group that would be the perfect mix of funny, political, philosophical, and anecdotal.

    G'Kar
    Londo Mollari
    Marcus Cole
    Michael Garibaldi
    Susan Ivanova

I was also tempted to include Vir or Lorien until I remembered about Marcus. Can you imagine if Marcus, Londo, and G'Kar all drank enough that they broke out into song together.

Oh, my.... But then Londo and G'Kar would probably fight over which planet had better opera.

          For the conversation:

          G'Kar
          Londo
Na'Toth (Julie Caitlin Brown version, mind you)
          Ivanova

          Warren Keffer
          David Corwin
          Trace Miller

Don't forget Julie Musante (Sheridan's political advisor). Marjorie Monaghan is Number One (Mars Resistance Leader). I wouldn't mind having Catherine Sakai and Laurel Takashima there also.

Marjorie being the actress's name. The character's real name was Tessa, if my memory serves.

Tessa Halloran, to be exact. (See "Objects in Motion", she gives her name to Zack at customs when there is a glitch with her indenticard. Some sources give the spelling as "Holloran", which is also possible since we only hear the name spoken once or twice and she's listed in the credits as "Number One". I assume Jan has a copy of the script, so maybe she can settle this.)

Can't believe that nobody has listed Delenn among their five. I'd have a very hard time getting the list down to five (even harder for a pyjama party) but I'm pretty sure Delenn would be on it.

I haven't watched the spin-offs, so sticking to the main B5 series I'd go with --

Delenn (did I spell that correctly?)
                      Lennier (after he does you-know-what)
                      G'Kar
                      Mr. Morden
                      Londo

Hmm . . . I'm not sure Morden would really bring much to the party, but I just love that character. Maybe I'd replace him with Zathras for some comic relief. Gotta have Londo and G'Kar together at any B5 event if you want to make sure that the sparks fly. Of all the characters, the one I'm most interested in after the series is probably Lennier. Getting him and Delenn together again would be very interesting.

You rang? I can tell you what the script says but that doesn't quite settle the question of her first name. In the Cast List, she's listed as:

                          NUMBER ONE (Margaret Halloran)

In the customs scene in the teaser, she tells Zack that she's Theresa Halloran. After Franklin 'rescues' her from Zack, he calls her Theresa and she say's "Tessa" and that's what Stephen and later, Sheridan both call her. Don't know where the "Margaret" comes from but it is on the pink and final revision. I'm glad. I don't think she'd be a good "Marge" or "Margie".

But the last name is definitely "Halloran".

I don't know about the "Margaret", either. Maybe her full name is "Margaret Theresa Halloran", which would add up to a good Irish name. (Although "Mary Margaret" or "Margaret Mary" would be more typical.)

"Tessa" is just a diminuative for "Theresa" so that's no biggie. Franklin addresses her by the name on her identicard, and she corrects him with her nickname. (The "th" combination in English was once pronouced as a hard "T", as it still is in "Thomas" and to some degree in "Anthony" - which has the nickname "Tony" - and it is common to form a nickname by dropping the "R" sounds from the original - hence Maggie comes from Margaret, Kit from Christopher, and Fanny from Frances.)

Margaret is one of those very old and very common names like Elizabeth, Katherine and Eleanor (often "running" in families) that necessarily spawned a great many nicknames, in order to keep the many Margarets or Elizabeths or Katherines in a family or a village straight. Margaret originally derives from the Latin margarita, "pearl". Variations in the Romance languages have given us diminuatives like "Rita", "Greta", "Gretchen", "Megan", "Meg" and "Meggy" (and their rhyming forms, Peg and Peggy), Madge, Midge and Maggie, as well as the "Marge" and "Margie" that strke you as so unlikely. "Marjorie", the actress's real name, is also a variant of Margaret, so JMS may have considered using it as her name before settling on Theresa.

Here's an interesting discussion of how nicknames are formed and used.

                            Regards,

                            Joe
