  • Season 5: Did you cry?

Now I am notorious for being a tough nut to crack when it comes to movies. I can hold back crying from probably most things that have people in pieces.

When I'm alone, sometimes I'll cave in. Give a movie or show a little of what it deserved. Just because it's right.

The last two episodes of B5 probably have done to me what most movies have a near impossible time doing. And I probably started losing it before they started trying!
But no matter how hard I fought it, as soon as people started saying goodbye in Season 5, I lost it. I could barely even manage going to the last episode. Let alone make it through without a pile of kleenex heaping up in front of the couch.

Congratulations to every damn last one of you involved in B5. Even years later, you're still kicking asses. Better than anyone else ever has.

    So. Be honest now people.

If there is someone out there who didn't cry, and claims themselves to be a B5 fan...I'd like to know where their heart ran off to

I balled and balled. But then, I'm an emotional queen.

But, as a storyteller myself, I judge what I see by how it moves me and goes with me when it's done.

And B5, simply put, completely changed me forever, so what does that tell ya.

With the pending arrival of the DVDs and JMS' commentary, I cheated a little last week. I pulled out my tape of SiL and watched it twice so I could get the worst of the crying out of the way. Still, after watching JMS walk down the hall after turning off the lights (which we hadn't seen before) and then hearing JMS during the "grand and glorious" departure of the Station...yeah, I cried.

But it was a good cry and one I look forward to crying each time I watch it again.

      Oh, Colony...
I balled and balled. But then, I'm an emotional queen.
Psssttt....it's spelled 'bawled'. Or was Omaha with you and that intentional??

I taped Babylon 5 when it came out, and had SiL on tape, but didn't watch it again until last year. I never saw it on broadcast again, either. It was just too hard to watch the first time, and I couldn't face the look on Delenn's face when she bid John farewell forever. It felt like nothing I have experienced in fiction.

It got me when I watched it again last year, but by then I was more rconciled to B5 being over, and so it wasn't as bad.

Damn, I miss having new episodes to look forward to! I envy those who haven't seen it, or who are watching for the first time.
I believe that when we leave a place, part of it goes with us and part of us remains. Go anywhere in the station, when it is quiet, and just listen. After a while, you will hear the echoes of all our conversations, every thought and word we've exchanged. Long after we are gone .. our voices will linger in these walls for as long as this place remains. But I will admit .. that the part of me that is going .. will very much miss the part of you that is staying.

Well on the subject...Did you cry?

Let me preface by first saying that throughout the series of Babylon 5, I (as well as probably many of you) considered the characters not only as valiant heros, but even as friends or even family. Tuning in each week was for me like sliding into a comfy chair. Nothing was able to bother me for the hour the B5 was on. I loved the show, and the characters, and continue to do so.

So I must unequivocally state that feeling about the characters as I do, I am unable to view the scene involving Delenn and Sheridan saying goodbye forever, without weeping tremendously!

Yes I will unabashedly admit it! Much boo-hooing!!!

After years of investing one's own personal time getting to know and ultimately care for these characters, how can such a person not feel sadness for Delenn and Sheridan at their final parting, or any of the other characters upon the ending of so great a story, so great an epic? Dare I say not just a television show, but a piece of our collective lives that afforded a deeper meaning?

                Cheers!

                      Well, I cried twice...

First when Delenn and Sheridan was sitting on the bench watching the sunrise (was it?). That just broke my heart.

The second time was when I realized that this "five year finished story" left a lot of unfinished storylines.

I definitely teared up but didn't cry per se so much and feel a profound sense of loss and confort at the same time. Sleeping In Light reminds me deeply of my father's death, watching over months as he slowly slipped away a little more each day (which was a blessing at the end), friends and family coming to visit to say goodbye for the last time, and watching my mother try to "keep a stiff upper lip" when she was being absolutely ripped apart inside. Then, finally telling him that I loved him and saying goodbye for the last time, which is something you never forget - it's burned into your mind and heart. It was years ago, but sometimes it's funny how you can identify so strongly with a piece of artistic expression, how it can touch you on a personal level. You could say that my mother still "watches the sunrise" every day, but she's strong, has built her own life afterward, and doesn't live in the past. However, she still enjoys having a cup of coffee and watching the sun come up every day. Life goes on, and some things...the important things...endure. That is what Sleeping In Light means to me.

I prefer to think of it as "leaving openings for spinoffs." Most of the "unresolved" stuff was non-arc anyway.

However, if you think there were major holes, then by all means start a thread on them and we can discuss it. I haven't had or seen a discussion like that in years.... it would be fun to do while we wait.
