I think you've got it, Dipper. There's only one shot in the script (now that I *finally* got around to looking).
Jan
I would argue that this is not definative, because JMS could have had the two shots in his mind and simply not put it in the script. Director's cut notwithstanding, JMS could have added it for his own reasons.
Like others, I recall from somewhere a JMS clue that the "two shots" thing was not accidental and was 'secretly" telling us something. I cannot track that down though, so own to the possibility that it is simply fevered fan extrapolation.
I think he means at that point in time. In Season One, the rules of Engagement between the Shadows and Vorlons were still in effect. That meant no destroying eachother's ships, or other more obvious (and massively destructive) acts of First-One War. I'll be right back with the "Two shots" thing.
Oh right. I forgot that the series progressed so much

Exactly. The first time a vorlon ship engages shadows vessels, the shadows kill Kosh for revenge. The most logical explanation for the first shot would be, that the guys doing the CGI decided that it looked more cool if it fired twice
well, I can't find the original JMS quote but references to it abound when you do a little searching.
After reading most of the responses, it seems JMS's words (more or less) were "What makes you think the Vorlons missed?"
So, i was wrong. he didn't state that the vorlon's didn't miss. they may very well have sent some errant beam way off into the middle of nowhere. But he did give us something to think about, a little poke to knock us out of our comfort zones.

I don't think it's credible that a Vorlon ship would fire on a Shadow vessel, even if just attempting to damage it. Could it have been a technomage ship ? Not sure of the motives, but from the Technomage trilogy it becomes clear that Vorlons do not like them, because they use Shadow technology. Or it could have been a Shadow probe keeping an eye on the situation.
A Vorlon ship wouldn't fire on a Shadow Vessel? I think you lost me on that one...

Just to clarify...the Vorlon ship destroyed only Deathwalker's ship, not
an EA vessel. And the Vorlon ship waited until Deathwalker's ship was far
from B5, just before entering the gate, before coming out to strike. At that
range, it couldn't miss, and at that distance, B5 couldn't react fast enough.
and Phil-Harmonic- A long time ago JMS acknowledged the "Two shots" thing with the cryptic comment "The Vorlons didn't miss." This insinuates that there were two ships destroyed and only one known race can render their ships invisible. Of course, the vorlon's wouldn't want to destroy the ship as that would be against their rules of engagement, so perhaps they just damaged it.
I did not find your JMS quote in the archive or any where else. Can you point it out, or tell me where it was said?

I don't think I've ever read that before, but that's a fun explanation.
The Vorlon ships have shown the ability to alter their form somewhat- perhaps if necessary the ships can bend their "neck" in order to target an enemy.
