  • Glad you're excited, Satai Delenn. Remember, though, that the Garibaldi segment has been pushed back to the second disk, assuming sales warrant a second (not that I'm doubtful, it's just what JMS said).

Now, does anybody know what Peter Woodward is doing lately? Remember, it was felt that the part would be recast due to his working on a movie.

And that's why everybody needs to spread the news far and wide .

      • Galen. Wow, I didn't see that coming. I was thinking in terms of B5 cast...
I was mildly surprised as well. But then, Galen was featured in A Call to Arms, the last original cast B5 TV movie. (Contrary to popular misconception, ACtA - which featured only two regulars from spin-off series - was not a "pilot film" for Crusade. There was no Crusade pilot. TNT bought the series based on a couple of proposed scripts.)

I'm surprised, though, that Garibaldi's story is "more complicated visually and technically" than Galen's.
A story set on Mars is going to require CGI exteriors, virtual sets and actual sets, none of which are readily transferable to other stories. And that's without knowing the specifics of the script JMS had written. (Was Garibaldi going to be out on the surface of Mars, which would require additional props and costumes, which probably have to be built from scratch?) By contrast every exterior space scene, ship, corridor and costume built for stories set on B5 can be banked for future installments. So it makes sense to "front load" the first project in order to get the biggest bang for the buck.

Because if it is Lochley/Galen, I can't help remembering that little TMoS thing.
        1) I don't remember any confirmation of which characters would have appeared in TMoS had it gone forward, just some speculation.

        2) Even if Lochley and Galen had been characters scheduled to appear in that film, I don't see how that means anything or why you "can't help remembering" TMoS. Is this some obscure way of saying that you think a Lochely/Galen pairing could somehow "jinx" TLT as this late date because you recall the two characters being associated with the other project? Because that would be a little excessive even given the normal level of galloping paranoia among B5 fans.

I never try to dance under any circumstances whatsoever. Dancing not Zathras's skill. Much apologizing always followed Zathras's previous attempts. Sometimes followed by band aids and x-rays. Zathras's dancing is not a pretty sight. Once described as "graceful as a moose". *

Well, according to his website, Peter's film project was called Closing The Ring and was supposed to have begun shooting last March. (Around the time TMoS was supposed to be in production, IIRC) There's been no real further updates, but since Peter had only written the film and wasn't announced to be part of the cast, I would think his active involvement was pretty much done, whether the film has been cancelled or not.

Hadn't even ocurred to me. But don't say it too loud, the devil may be listening

No, maybe the problem was my English. I just meant that Galen and Lochley were rumored to appear on TMoS, because of some casting sheets being leaked or something.
Other than that I'm not exactly sure what I'm saying, just thinking out loud. I don't think even for a second that JMS remade the entire movie into what was gonna be a 30 min segment, but it certainly caught my atention that they were (allegedly, whatever) going to appear on JMS's last script and now they may again appear together. Kinda like JMS taking something out of his chest.

              • Not that he could do anything with the TMoS stuff anyway, since the script belongs to the producers who were trying to put the deal together.

                • That's possible, Spanish Fan. As those of us who've been getting the script books have noticed, when JMS has an idea he likes, he finds a way to use it. My thinking is that he might well have enjoyed writing for Lochley and Galen (assuming that the TMoS rumors were correct, of course) and decided to explore that in the mini-movies.

                  • Spanishfan's point brings a thought up. Since we were going for three segments (30 mins each) does the droppiing (sorry, posponing) or Mr Garibaldi mean than we get 2 45 minute segments? or just Huuuuuuuuuuuuuge budget increases and 2 really really cool-looking 30 minute segments.
I'm not sure which I'd want more.

It degenerates and corrupts both sides to ever more sordid levels of existence, in their need to gain an advantage over the enemy. Those actively involved in combat are almost always damaged goods for the rest of their lives. If their bodies don't bear scars, their minds do, ofttimes both. Many have said it before, but it can't be said to enough, war is hell. "

                    • From JMS's post:

                      So we decided to
postpone one of the three to the next DVD, and lengthen the other two
                      to make up the difference.
GIven that the Garibaldi story was the most
complicated visually and technically, also the most difficult from a
CGi perspective, that's the one that got pushed until, potentially,
                      next time.

And if the sales are anywhere near what WB expects, and I think they
will be, there's no question that there will be more of these down the
road. So we're gong to focus in on those two stories and knock them
out of the park. Same length, same running time, and now even bigger
than at first anticipated since the budget on number three will now be
                      applied to the other two.
Emphasis added by li'l old me.

My memory was never reliable, and I may be mixing up two stories, so take this with a grain of salt, but I think Richard Attemborough was supposed to direct the movie, and Woodward wanted to stay around, not unlike JMS made sure to be there when they shot the Londo/G'Kar scenes.
And also something about a relative of Attemborrogh's (a daughter?) dying in the Tsunami short before the shooting date, which caused the production to stop abruptly.

                        • Are we sure that Galen is on the first disc, and not part of the postponed Garibaldi story? I'm not entirely sure how to read that sentence mentioning Galen.

                            This is the sentence:

Somebody elsewhere commented on the lack of a comma after the word Galen but that's simply correct sentence construction. At this point we don't know who the fourth character would have been paired with...if anybody at all. It's possible that one character would be a common element through them all. Any further speculation would probably go into story idea territory, though, which we avoid here.

                            • Ok. Let me then just say... woooooohoooooo, more Galen!

And Galen has some pretty strong connections with certain unresolved or never breached storylines from a certain spin off, which is kind of getting my hopes up.

                              • Whoops..I missed the little sentence about lengthening the other two before posting to the newsgroup asking about that. Anyway..good news all around today. We all figured Lochley would be part of the equation, and it turned out that was right. My other two guesses were Sheridan and Garibaldi, so those weren't too far off. There's a pool idea for you Jan...as each DVD comes out guess the three characters.

I'm surprised that Peter Woodward is doing it, but that's good news. Galen really could use a li'l more screen time for 'splaining as a character and storyline. Perfect. Maybe we can get the rest of the Crusade cast involved at some point woo! I wonder if the LoTR characters might show up also, though it seems like JMS is kinda putting that whole project out of sight out of mind. Because it never gets mentioned.

I'm kinda sad about the Garibaldi story getting postponed though because he's my favorite character in the show. Makes me laugh all the time. Still, it looks to be good..and the sfx budget being high is awesome news (how unlike B5!). I'm so excited.

Hopefully my newsgroup post worked...I got a server error.

As much as I'm happy about the story choices, I am a little concerned about the sales. Crusade was never all that popular and Lochley isn't one of the most popular B5 characters, as a lot of people resent season 5.

I'm also curious as to whether the other main chars from the show will be making supporting role or cameo appearances. Hmm.
