  • Warren Keffer

One thing I always loved about B5 was always how natural the plot evolution seemed to be...things you saw in season 1 that didnt make sense until season 4 and vice versa. So one thing that always bugged me was Warren Keffer, in his one season he seemed a wee bit tacked on, never really integral to anything and no one can convince me that a bit part player with a Ahab like obsession was the best way to introduce the Shadows....

....Now I know the script books said something about him originally having a bigger role and then JMS wanting him dead...

...And I know it's lazy and I should buy the book....

...But could someone please tell me why he was originally there????

WB simply forced a topgun character on JMS and he killed him off the first chance he got.

JMS had intended to introduce a squadron leader named Idori (Dory) Shima but that character was vetoed by PTEN (not WB) as being too thoughtful and not dynamic enough. They wanted "B5's Han Solo", somebody who could bring in the female demographic. So, while JMS added Waren Keffer as requested, he intended to eliminate him at the earliest opportunity.

        REALLY???

Well I always thought JMS liked that Keffer character and WB told him to kill him. I think the original idea was to let Keffer destroy Zha'HaDum on a renegade flight, then fly to sector 14 and travel back through time to become Valen in the past .

You're right, Radhil, Morden's got it all wrong. Actually, Keffer was responsible for the deciding vote that started the Earth/Minbari war and then used the Triluminary to look human and infiltrated Earthforce.

I think that Keffer seemed tacked partly for what's stated on that (long) post above. JMS knew that he'd kill him off, so he payed little attention to making the character interesting.
I wonder if maybe something similar happened with Byron...

I don't think so. Even as far back as the Bible, I'm pretty sure that the writers were instructed not to get Lyta involved with anybody so it seems that Byron planned from the beginning. Although Lyta was never supposed to be the one to be romantically involved with him, just a follower.

Jan, had you seen the original, original plot (the one that was written in the margins of the Necronomicon) you would have seen that "Keffer" started out as a charactor named "K'Fer," a Narn who was using a Changeling Net to imitate Delenn and cast the deciding vote (in order to boost Narn arms sales). it was after this that he took on the form of a starfury pilot because, as we learned in Midnight on the Firing Line the Narns always put one of their own near any sold weapons to make sure they don't get resold to third parties.

JMS killed him off at the end of season 2 because G'Kar was going to buy back the arms and thus the whole raison d'etre for K'Fer was gone. The weird visual stuff that happened to K'Fer when hit by the Slicer Beam was deliberately not unlike what happened to the Minbari with the CN in the pilot.
I believe that when we leave a place, part of it goes with us and part of us remains. Go anywhere in the station, when it is quiet, and just listen. After a while, you will hear the echoes of all our conversations, every thought and word we've exchanged. Long after we are gone .. our voices will linger in these walls for as long as this place remains. But I will admit .. that the part of me that is going .. will very much miss the part of you that is staying.

I wouldn't have minded a good pilot character, but Keffer just plain sucked. Somebody like Mitch would have been good as a recurring character.
Recently, there was a reckoning. It occurred on November 4, 2014 across the United States. Voters, recognizing the failures of the current leadership and fearing their unchecked abuses of power, elected another party as the new majority. This is a first step toward preventing more damage and undoing some of the damage already done. Hopefully, this is as much as will be required.
