  • B5: In Memory Still Bright

With the recent passing of Andreas Katsulas, death of the B5 actors has been on my mind. I went through imdb, checking the series, movies, and Crusade, and have found that we've lost even more than I knew.

Richard Biggs, Dr. Stephen Franklin, 18 Mar 1960 through 22 May 2004

    Andreas Katsulas, G'Kar, 18 May 1946 through 13 Feb 2006

    Tim Choate, Zathras & Polix, 11 Oct 1954 through 24 Sep 2004

Rex Ryon, First Man in Crusade: The Long Road, 05 Apr 1953 through 19 Apr 2005

    Lee Mathis, Fighter #1 Signs & Portents, 10 Mar 1952 through 01 May 1996

Greg McKinney, Walker Smith in TKO, 07 Feb 1957 through 12 Apr 1998

Paul Winfield, General Franklin in GROPOS, 22 May 1941 through 07 Mar 2004

Tony Steedman, Dr Jacobs in Hunter, Prey (Also So-Crates in Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure), 1927 through 04 Feb 2001

Lewis Arquette, Gen. Smits in Point of No Return, 14 Dec 1935 through 10 Feb 2001

Nicholas R. Oleson, Thug #1 in Shadow Dancing, 23 Feb 1966 through 02 June 1997

    Jeff Corey, Justin in Z'Ha'Dum, 10 Aug 1914 through 16 Aug 2002

Roy Brocksmith, Brother Alwyn in Deconstruction of Falling Stars, 15 Sep 1945 through 16 Dec 2001

Trevor Goddard, Trace in Learning Curve, 14 Oct 1962 through 07 June 2003

Brian McDermott, Durhan in Learning Curve, 23 July 1934 through 05 Nov 2003

Thanks to you OS. What an eye opening piece of research.

So many names. They will never be gone, as long a we remember them.

And now, the temp page ...

        In Memory

I haven't had time yet to get screen grabs for this, so I googled and found a few, but I am missing a lot ... If anybody has "out of character" or non B5 pictures for the following, please let me know:

Lewis Arquette, Lee Mathis, Brian McDermott, Greg McKinney, Rex Ryon, Tony Steedman (yes, So-Crates)

        Thank you!

That's great, Omaha. It'll be really powerful once you've got all the photos.

I know it's silly...but it wasn't until I saw his picture that I realized that 'Brother Alwyn' had died. I loved his character!

            Very nice, OmahaStar. Two suggestions:

            1) I know you're doing it alphabetically, but the "last name, first name" convention looks like a phone book to me. Any chance you could be convinced to just list them normally?

            2) For Andreas, there are any number of pictures better than that one (the candid from DragonCon)! E-mail or PM me and I can send you a few choices if you like. Oh, and okay, three actually:

            3) True, his real name was "Andrew," but since that fact was nearly unknown in fandom until it appeared in his hometown obituary (not in the LA Times or the Hollywood Reporter), it's a fair bet that was something he was interested in keeping private. Sure, we know it now; but since none of us knew him as that in life, my preference would be seeing him listed as "Andreas Katsulas" rather than "Andrew C. 'Andreas' Katsulas."

Hope you don't mind the critique - I've got editor blood running through my veins!

That's one of the things that'll be changed, along with a link to each person's imdb.com page

Oh yeah, I know there are better pix out there ... If you've got some handy, please email them to me at [email protected], or PM links to me.

Ah, see, I was trying to be all scholarly there. lol you're right, though. I didn't know he had another name until reading his obit.

Are you kidding? I *very much* appreciate it! It'll only make things better.

Great! I'll e-mail you some pictures. (I assume you'd prefer these not be pictures of him smooching me?)

I'll also see if I can manage to grab some screencaps of So-crates - I've got both Bill & Ted DVDs, but right now I'm fighting a small premature migraine and I can barely hold my head up...

Thank you very much, AmyG ... You sent some great stuff ... Depending on how this evolves, I may end up making a page for each person with more pix and stuff.

I've spent some time going through my dvds and have pix for each person. The hardest was definately Lee Mathis, who has nothing I could find on the net, and only appears in the cockpit of a starfury, either in a really fuzzy face shot on the viewscreen, or in a profile shot in the 'fury .... Yikes!

But they're up. What do y'all think? Any suggestions or comments? How can I make it better? Or does this suffice?

Very nice page, OS. I am gonna pass this address on.
I believe that when we leave a place, part of it goes with us and part of us remains. Go anywhere in the station, when it is quiet, and just listen. After a while, you will hear the echoes of all our conversations, every thought and word we've exchanged. Long after we are gone .. our voices will linger in these walls for as long as this place remains. But I will admit .. that the part of me that is going .. will very much miss the part of you that is staying.

Ahhh ... figured out how to check the old posts ... a little slow here at times. Anyway, I had been away since my internet service was 'unestablishable' on our new acreage. Wanted to add the comments I would have made back then could I have logged on ...

                        In memory of Andreas Katsulas...
"The candle that burns twice as bright burns half as long..."

How true of this gifted actor. If you listen to the commentary from the actors on the DVD's they mention how they would sit and listen to him read the phone book. Andreas Katsulas; G'Kar, was the heart and soul of the cast of that series and truly what kept me watching. The death of these actors (Biggs, Winfield, Choate, and Katsulas) is saddening and puts a finality that no series finale or bad spin-off cancellation ever could. The impact this show had on me is tremendous and Andreas Katsulas part in it was integral. I am saddned at his passing and the fact that G'Kar is essentially gone with him. It is fortunate that we can always rewatch these performances and that the work these people did will always live on as long as we remember them. It is warming to know that his family was with him but sad still in the mortality that faces us all.
Truly Andreas' candle burned twice as bright.
"If I could be a bird, I'd be a Flying Purple People Eater because then people would sing about me and I could fly down and eat them because I hate that song. " - Jack Handey

This is a nice thread I happened upon when searching for HUNTER, PREY 2.13. Last year Bernie Casey, who played Derek Cranston in the episode, passed away. If anyone watched the Emmy awards IN MEMORIAM segment on September 17th, 2018 you would have seen a still photo of Bernie Casey from Babylon 5 Season 2 Episode 13 as his tribute photo - the segment is on YouTube if you would like to see it. The shot of Derek Cranston is very brief and only fans would realize what it is. And coincidentally I am delivering this news on the one year anniversary of Mr. Casey's passing.

Man, this thread reminds me how much I miss a lot of the old regular forum members. Debate was always a bit more lively with them around! I wonder if they still look in here at all. I must admit I find FB less and less appealing as a way to talk or communicate with Fandom. Something about an old forum like this seems more 'civilised?'

When the winter nights start to draw in I might consider a re-watch.
