  • Andreas Katsulas has passed away

Any truth to the reports of his death?

Last edited by Dr Maturin; 02-14-2006, 02:21 PM.
Recently, there was a reckoning. It occurred on November 4, 2014 across the United States. Voters, recognizing the failures of the current leadership and fearing their unchecked abuses of power, elected another party as the new majority. This is a first step toward preventing more damage and undoing some of the damage already done. Hopefully, this is as much as will be required.

This is not the sort of story I wanted to find out about here, but I just called Andreas' agent to double-check and unfortunately it is true.

Sad news indeed and my heartfelt condolences to the family of Andreas. Was this something sudden or was he not well for a while?

He had lung cancer according to Pat Tallman at a convention .My prayers go out to his family.

It wasn't common knowledge as he didn't want any news about ill health to interfere with his getting work (plus he was a very private person) and so the request had gone out to keep it off the 'net.

I'm *so* very sorry to hear of his death! Joe, if you hear of any details (that the public has any right to know), please keep us posted.

I wonder if that prohibition is still in place?

            Sad day, indeed.

I don't think it's a secret as it's hit Sci Fi Wire already. Again, confirmed by his agent.

Just heard from JMS a little while ago, and apparently there is no public memorial set at this point; just a private memorial in Andreas's home town of St Louis, and something private in LA.

Personally, and this is purely my own opinion, if the fans want to do something to honor his memory, they might want to think about making a donation to one of their local cancer charities, such as the American Cancer Society here in the States, or MacMillan Cancer Relief in the UK to name just a few. At least that way, we're turning a tragedy into something positive. Just a thought, for whatever it's worth.

I'm hoping that his family will suggest whatever they prefer but your suggestions are good ones, Joe, thanks.

This is insanely sad news, even with having known that he's been sick for a while. As Tara says in the Buffy episode "The Body," "it's always sudden." It's hard to know what to say; I just hope he wasn't in much pain.

Its sad we have lost to so many of the babylon 5 cast. The Orginal Star Trek cast went over 30 years before they lost any one. Babylon ddin't even make it ten.

This news makes a sad day for me even sadder. God rest Andreas soul.
And I am thankful for the time we spent together.

JMS put a chilling effect out on discussion of Mr. Katsulas's illness?

no I think is was someone else, it wasn't heavy handed in any way it was just a request made to respect the fact andreas didn't want this to go too public.

JMS did nothing of the sort. Andreas's friends and colleagues were told that he wanted to keep the information as quiet as possible, so that he and his family could deal with this without a lot of publicity, and have some privacy in their final time with him. Most people respected that and kept the news off of their boards, forums, websites and blogs. A handful of people did not, but that's between them and their karma. Anyway, this was no edict from JMS - this was simply respecting Andreas's own wishes, from his own mouth, as told to me by someone in a position to know exactly what he wanted.

I'm glad he was able to have that small amount of peace, at least.

No, *Andreas* made the request of the cast and crew who knew about it that it *not* be made public because any word that he was in ill health could effect his chances of getting work which would effect his being able to keep his SAG insurance benefits. Word leaked in a few instances but pretty much everybody contacted was gracious enough to mute the news when requested.
