The way I understood it, the studio execs at TNT wanted to continue the series, but with changes to the showà Remember the episode in S5 with the virtual porn shop? JMS didnÆt want to make those kinds of changes to the show, so he bent a little to please them and finished his show the best way that he could.

IMHO Season Five could be skipped except for the last episode ôSleeping In Lightö and it would not change the outcome of the show. Most viewers knew it was filmed during the end of the fourth season, before TNT picked up Babylon 5 and accepted season 5 as part of the whole package.

... I have to agree. Season 5 is much more episodic (episodal?) than the series before it, and gets all tied up in that Byron story, which is the one thing about the series I dislike rather much. The rest seems only remotely connected to the arc... But that said, I'm still glad for the 5th season.

... I DO really like that episode with the two worker guys... what was it, 'View from the Gallery' ?

I would never, never give up the Centauri Prime arc! I love the fifth season for all the off-format shows, too. Starting with Deconstruction of Falling Stars to Day of the Dead, on to The Corps is Mother, The Corps is Father.... I love the fifth season!

The only shows in S5 I rearly watch are the ones devoted to Byron and his cause. Other wise I love S5 and really what would B5 be without The Fall of Centauri Prime with Londo rising to Emporer.

Or the absolute tearing out of our collective hearts in "Objects at Rest" and "Sleeping in Light". My wife cries even when she isn't paying complete attention (I watch about 5 times for her one) but knows it is on.

Erm, Hang on now, are we talking about the same show here?

Whilst I am the first to admit that it took more than one viewing for S5 to really make a deep impact on me, I could not be happy without the fifth season. We'd all known that Londo ended up as Empero rwith one of those 'Watchers' on his neck, but it was the events that got him to that point we wanted to see. We knew that things would need to start happening that would eventually lead to the TELEPATH WAR, but wee needed to see them occur to cement them into the B5 reality (don't forget, by the time CRUSADE came along, the teep war was already over).

No sorry, Season 5 - whilst being different, and let's face facts, after Season 4, it goes without saying that Season 5 would be different - was still top notch, unbeatable, BABYLON 5 brilliance at its best.

It is my opinion (don't expect others to agree) that B5 at is non-arced, episodic 'worst' (so-to-speak - it is terminology I am using purely for the sake of this statement)...was still head-and-shoulders better than Next Gen, or any other recent TREK massacred reincarnation for that matter, on its best ever day.

... After stating that S5 was more episodic (episodal), and then reading Jan's comments... I put in a few DVDs and reviewed....

... Yeah, it was a stupid thing to say. The previous four years of possibly the most meaningful arc in the series (Mollari's) comes to a head in S5.

... Believe it or not, I was thinking that was S4.

                ... I stand corrected.

                  wandering briefly off-topic here but...
I always rated DS9 above any other trek. IT took the B5 "arc" idea and ran with it for seven seasons, although it was episodic, it didn't do the usual trek thing of pushing the reset button every episode, and there was a logical flow - characters developed and changed, relationships grew. Still not as good as B5 , but almost got there.

It degenerates and corrupts both sides to ever more sordid levels of existence, in their need to gain an advantage over the enemy. Those actively involved in combat are almost always damaged goods for the rest of their lives. If their bodies don't bear scars, their minds do, ofttimes both. Many have said it before, but it can't be said to enough, war is hell. "

... You cannot be serious. So... you're telling us that "Grey 17 is Missing" (think that's the title) is head and shoulders above any TNG Trek episode? I just can't agree, and frankly, I'd bet money JMS wouldn't either.

... Anybody remember the TNG episode where the Federation is at war with the Klingon Empire, and things are not going well - reality has slipped into an different reality... Picard and his crew's uniforms slip to "dangerous black" before our very eyes as the change takes place... That was a great episode.

... How about Voyager and "The Year of Hell"? Damn, that was great, too.

... But if you honestly feel that way, more power to you. Seriously, this isn't a jab, I just can't imagine thinking that.

                    ... Cheers.

Well I did say that it was just my opinion...As it happens, that "Grey 17..." episode (you did get the title right ) also contained the fabulous 'Marcus defends Delenn from Neroon' thing going off as the 'b' plot. This more than made up for the fairly weak Zarg plot line. And even then, it was good to see SF/Horror legend Robert Englund on B5.

As an off-topic reply to your reply to my off topic sentence (still with me?) I have always enjoyed Trek, I loved the 3 classic seasons, slept through most of TNG, enjoyed DS9 for the most part and tried to enjoy Voyager and Enterprise but just didn't get into them. Things did always seem to pick up when the Klingons showed up though. I always felt that the humans were too evolved and so too dull. It is the baring of the rough edges to our nature that generates the drama - possibly why I liked DS9 more, and Babylon 5 tremendously so.

... This was the second time I've watched the series, and, it seems to get better with each viewing (I seem to recall posting semi-negative comments about Crusade in the past... I take them all back). (Insert crying smiley face).

crusade....... ahhhhh - loved the show, definitely gone way before it's time....

only thing though - I always felt that the theme tune for the show was kinda strange... you know how some theme tunes can be boosting (B5 and Jeremiah for instance), some can, well not to put too fine a point on it, make you cringe (like the second version of the "Enterprise" theme, which just left me with visions of John Denver rolling in his grave....) -

anyway, I always felt kinda uncomfortable listening to the Crusade theme.....cant put my finger on why........

I love Crusade's music ... including the opening title.

Just thought I'd get that in before there is any real danger of the thread degenerating into another Evan Chen bashing.

I loved the Crusade opening title. There were a few other times when I found the music jarring but I adored the main title. It was mysterious and just a touch sad which worked nicely when you think of Gideon and Galen.

Crusade's music was different, but I happened to like it. I have the Crusade Soundtrack CD from Sonic Images in my collection and happen to listen to it now and then (if not so often than B5 ), and I enjoy it every time.

That said, I absolutely HATE what Evan H. Chen did for "A Call to Arms". His "music" (rather: noise) for that one really ruined the whole movie for me. Such a shame...
