I hope you folks donÆt mind helping me with a little market research of sorts, but IÆd be very grateful for your feedback. Right now, this is purely hypothetical, and I donÆt want to go any further until I can decide whether I should go ahead. So here goes.
As some of you probably know, I covered Babylon 5 from pretty much the very beginning, right through the series and into Crusade and Legend of the Rangers. During that decade or so, I probably had more than 200 interviews and articles published on B5 and the various spin-offs, and I canÆt tell you how many people I actually spoke to during that time. While the series was actually in production, I had hoped to write a book, but it never happened, for a variety of different reasons, including the need to be a bit circumspect. The fact is, while quite a number of cast and crew members were very forthcoming with their insights and experiences, I didnÆt want to risk offending anyone while the show was in production.
At any rate, I recently began to think about the idea of a book again, and whether or not people would still be interested in reading it. To that end, IÆve spent the last week or so sorting through all the interview material I had on hand and discovered that thereÆs quite a lot there; in fact, I topped the 800-page mark the other day, and I still havenÆt finished putting everything together yet. That obviously means splitting things up in some way, depending on how it all divides up in the end.
So hereÆs why IÆm running this past all of you. Before I spend a ridiculous amount of hours compiling the ultimate B5 companion, are there still people out there who would want to read it? Since itÆs difficult to imagine that a publisher would still be interested, this is probably a project I have to create myself somehow, maybe distributing via the Internet and at conventions. It would also have to be all text; if there was any licensed material such as photos or art, IÆm sure the lovely folks at Warners would be only to happy to send their lawyers our for a visit.
Again, this is all hypothetical right now, but ideally, IÆd love to try and finish the project by this time next year, long after the JMS script books have all been published and people are started to get money in their bank accounts again. But right now, IÆm just trying to ascertain if people are interested. As a fan myself, I know IÆd be interested in a book (or books) that examined the genesis of Babylon 5 from beginning to end, hopefully answering some of the questions that have really never been addressed over the years. ThereÆs also been quite a lot of revisionist history that has become fact and IÆve always wanted to set the record straight about some of it.
As I say, this is purely in the æwhat-ifÆ stage, so IÆd welcome everybodyÆs input here if you can find the time.
All the best,
Joe
